Personal development without spiritual growth is like taking care of the exterior parts of a vehicle and neglecting the engine. Well-balanced personal development should be from the inside out – spirit, soul and body.
“And Jesus kept increasing in wisdom and in stature, and in favor with God and men.” – Luke 2:52 AMP
Here are 5 practical ways you can make spiritual growth a priority in your overall personal development:
Be consistent with habits that will add to your spiritual growth such as prayer, studying the scriptures and attending church services. Not in a religious way but with an understanding of the benefit it will have on your inner person.
Fast and Pray
The benefits of fasting to our physical health have been discovered through scientific study. When combined with prayer, fasting also benefits us in our spiritual development.
Meditate on Scriptures
Many people have now discovered the benefits of meditation, such as relaxation and mental well-being. Rather than just meditating on thin air or happy thoughts, try meditating on scriptures which are able to build you up spiritually and set you up for the right kind of success (Joshua 1:8, Psalm 1:2-3).
Spend Time in the Right Environment
Your environment can either hinder or encourage your spiritual growth. Be around people who will help and inspire you to grow in your spiritual walk rather than staying the same year in year out. Spiritual growth should lead to measurable and consistent progress which is evident.
Help Another Person Grow
You can grow by helping someone else grow. That’s why personal and spiritual growth is so important. The more you commit to it the more you can help others to do the same. The more you help others grow the more you yourself grow (Proverbs 11:25).
